Do you sometimes feel like you're overwhelmed with information about what it looks like to live a healthy life? Maybe you follow all of the latest fitness and diet trends but you find yourself feeling like something's missing or you're not quite getting it somehow. What I'm going to share with you today is one of the most simple yet effective ways to kickstart your wellbeing and get in touch with what you really want for your health and consequently, your life!
I had this idea in the car the other day while I was driving and thinking about how over-complicated living a healthy life can seem to be these days: you just need to know how you want to feel, then go do the things that take you closer to feeling like that. It is literally that simple! But so often we don't know what this means or how to do this, so we end up looking to anything external that promises to help us, or in the worst cases, 'fix' us. However, nobody is ever going to know what you need like you do. Nobody is ever going to be give you the gift you can give yourself: listening to yourself and giving yourself exactly what you need in each moment of each day.
So how do I tune my health compass?
Take a moment, wherever you are right now, to take some long, slow breaths and find your centre. Got it? OK, now I want you to tap in to what it feels like, for you, to be in the BEST health of your life. Get your imagination juices flowing. This doesn't even have to be a way you've necessarily felt before; the sky is the limit! Think about what sorts of things you're doing, who you are with, where you are and most importantly how you feel. Let that feeling really flourish in your body; feel it in every cell and get familiar with it. If you want to, write it down and make note of the images and feelings that come to mind. If you have written down lots of imagery words like 'at the beach', 'wearing my workout gear' and things along those lines, make sure to include more feeling words like 'energised', 'inspired' and words that generate an emotional response for you.
Now your only job is to go out into the world, each and every day, and do more of the things that make you feel like you did when doing this exercise. It's not about getting your life to align with the imagery of how your best life looked; too often we focus on what our lives are meant to look like. What is most important is to do a mini litmus test on each of your activities for the day and ask yourself, "Is this bringing me closer to that feeling, or not?". I want you to completely go with the flow here and let go of ALL preconceptions you have about healthy vs unhealthy, good vs bad and the whole black and white way of viewing your health, not to mention your life. It is not helpful. Welcome the things that light you up and bring you closer to this feeling into your life, and gently let go of the things that don't. It really can be this simple, if you'll trust yourself and allow it to be. And I guarantee you, you will be completely surprised about what you find out about yourself on this journey: some of the things you've always done will simply melt away, and the most uncanny things will pop into your life and be the practice that is giving you such a buzz each day.
I try to do this with all things in my life and as with most people, it's a work in progress. We're not fixed, static beings; we are constantly evolving and in a state of flux, which is why I don't believe in trying to fit ourselves into a one-size-fits-all box. It's like trying to tie down the wind. Better to work with your internal flow than to eternally struggle against it, or try to make it match someone else's.
Are you willing to have a go at this and see what happens? Let me know in the comments what this means for you or how you find this practice because I LOVE connecting with you about these things.
