After reading some interesting facts lately, and following an intuitive hunch that's been a long time coming, I've started replacing my morning coffees with other morning practices that are able to boost my energy levels just as effectively. Each of these simple things work great on their own but will only add more momentum to your rising energy levels if done in tandem!
1. Drink Water
This might seem really obvious but it's number one on my list for a reason: most people are chronically dehydrated! This is the most beneficial thing we can do for ourselves when we first wake up because it's the body's call to action to wake up and get into gear. Water is one of the most important substances in our bodies, at a cellular level, for all of our metabolic and catabolic processes. I'm sure you can imagine how difficult it is for these processes to run efficiently in thick, molasses-like blood. Sluggish much? I like to drink two large glasses of water pretty much as soon as I'm vertical in the mornings and it never fails to take less than a few minutes to really energise my body, and leave me with a spring in my step. I urge you to try it tomorrow morning! You won't be disappointed.
Also quite an obvious one but so effective that I couldn't not include it in this list. If you're not the kind of person who enjoys springing out of bed for an early morning run (ha!) then think of anything that will get your blood flowing and start your day off right. It's crucial that we enjoy exercise in order for it to become a part of our daily lives, so pick something that you actually like doing. It can be as simple as stretching for 10 mins, some light yoga or a few sun salutations, or a walk with the dog...hula hooping? The point is not what we're doing but that we're doing something. And if you are the type to spring out of bed for an early morning run, kudos to you!
3. Apple Cider Vinegar
Yep, here I am bringing it up again! Want to feel refreshed, kickstart your metabolism for the day and alkalise your body before that morning coffee hit? Apple Cider Vinegar is the ticket. Read my post about the benefits of drinking Apple Cider Vinegar here.
4. Dry Body Brushing
OK, I'll admit, I had a dry body brush for two years before I did anything with it. BUT lately I have been saying a little "thank you" every morning for the fact that I've incorporated it into my daily routine. Dry Body Brushing is really effective in getting your blood pumping around your body and I often notice that I feel refreshed and ready to take on the day after doing it. The dry bristles serve the purpose of exfoliating your skin and getting your lymph moving, which is great for reducing the appearance of cellulite. The rule of thumb is to always brush towards your heart, either in circular motions or long brush strokes, for as long or as little as you feel comfortable with. It's best if done in the morning before jumping in the shower, so that you wash off the exfoliated skin cells. I bought my brush from The Body Shop and am very happy with the texture of the bristles and usability of the brush.
Perhaps the most obvious of them all? Seriously though, how often do we turn off our alarm, dragging ourselves out of bed, already future-tripping about the day ahead? I know I do this all the time despite being fully aware that there's a better way to start my day. But on the days I do remember that there's a better way, I open my eyes and take several deep breaths before doing anything at all. I don't immediately leap forward into the day ahead, already knee-deep in my "I have to get to work on time" mantra. I actually just lie in bed, eyes open, breathing and allowing the first moments of space in my day to be taken entirely for myself. It sounds small but this is such an important, nurturing thing to do for ourselves. I also feel it's really important to start our day with silence and space, since for most of us these things are few and far between at any other point in our day.
That's it! I hope you implement at least one of these methods into your morning and are rewarded with boosted energy levels and a grounded sense of self that lasts you the entire day. Let me know in the comments below if you do! What are some ways that you boost your energy levels in the morning?
With love and best wishes,
